St Margaret of Antioch (Onorio Marinari)

$16.00

Margaret the Virgin (c. 289–c. 304), also known as "Marina the Great Martyr" in the East, is revered as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and was among the saints who mystically guided St. Joan of Arc in battle. At the age of 15, she was pursued for marriage by a Roman governor, who demanded that she renounce her Christian faith. Margaret's steadfast refusal led to her brutal torture, during which several miraculous events transpired. Legend tells that she was swallowed by Satan in the form of a dragon but escaped unharmed when the cross she carried irritated the dragon's stomach. Ultimately, she was martyred by beheading. St. Margaret's feast day is celebrated on July 20th, and due to her emergence from the dragon's belly she is the patron saint of pregnant women, childbirth, and protection against diabolical infestations.

Onorio Marinari (1627–1715) was an Italian Baroque painter and printmaker primarily active in Florence. Born into an artistic family, his father Sigismondo di Pietro Marinari was also a painter. Onorio trained with his cousin, Carlo Dolci, and was later influenced by artists Simone Pignoni and Francesco Furini. One of his notable works, a fresco in the Palazzo Capponi in Florence, dates to 1707. Marinari catered mostly to Florentine and Tuscan patrons, yet his talents extended beyond painting. In 1674, he published an essay on astronomy titled Fabbrica ed uso dell' Annulo Astronomico. Among his students was the noted still-life painter Bartolomeo Bimbi.
